Coastal landscapes - glossary

Cliff: A vertical wall of rock near the sea.
Flat coast: where the land is almost the same elevation as the sea (beach).

Gulf: A big area of water that is partially surrounded by land.
Bay: A medium area of water that is partially surrounded by land.
Cove: A small body of water that is partially surrounded by land.
Beach: Area of land with sand near the sea.
Sand: Small grains of rocks found on beaches and deserts.


Island: An area of land surrounded by water.
Archipelago: A group of islands.
Sea or ocean:  Large body of salty water.
Peninsula: land surrounded by sea on three sides.
Cape: An extension of land in water.

Port: A man-made area made to protect boats.
Lighthouse: It is a tall building that has a light at the top to guide the boats.
